Could you go peat-free?
The extraction of peat for use in horticulture continues to have a detrimental effect on peatland in the UK and elsewhere. While this doesn’t occur on the Isle of Man, we still import peat compost for use in our gardens, and many plants are grown in peat. You can help to reduce this damaging practice by choosing peat-free compost, such as that produced on the Island by Ballaneven.
Find out how Leigh Morris, outgoing CEO of Manx Wildlife Trust, moved from using peat extensively in his career in horticulture to going peat-free in the name of conservation. He explains all in this article in the Horticulturalist journal.
